There are many good reasons to consider home schooling, but you also have to be prepared for what's involved. From the legal requirements in your state to the schedule and curriculum you're going to set up, there's a lot to consider. Home schooling makes sense on many levels, but it's not always easy for parents, who must take on all kinds of new responsibilities.
Home schooling is such a big change for both parents and children that it can be hard to know how it will turn out. If, however, you were to use part of a summer to try out home schooling, you could get a taste of it before actually committing to it. Even dedicating a portion of the summer to this experiment can tell you a lot about what home schooling involves. Doing this may or may not change your feeling about home schooling, but it's something that can be very useful. Either way, it's a good idea to test the waters before making a commitment to home schooling your kids.
If you're going to be successful at home schooling, you don't only have to act as a teacher, but also as a disciplinarian at times. Just as teachers in a traditional classroom must be able to hold the kids' attention and enforce certain rules, so you'll have to do these things as a parent-teacher. If your kids are used to relaxing at home, it may take some adjusting for them to see home as a school environment. Like any good teacher, you have to find a way to keep them interested in the lesson. You have to make a strict rule about games, electronic devices and other distractions not being permitted when kids are learning or studying.
One other thing to mention is that each child has a different learning style which means you're homeschooling must accommodate these differentiations. You'll certainly notice, hopefully early on, that your child has a specific learning style that you must adapt to in order to teach them properly. Some kids learn better by listening, and others learn better by seeing what is being taught. You might want to try flashcards with one child, and sing songs with the other. Watch carefully! Your children will respond differently to different forms of teaching so be aware of what helps them the most. This works great for your kids in that as their needs change, as well as their abilities, you can accommodate them by modifying your lesson plan accordingly.
With mainstream education experiencing so many problems, home schooling looks ever more appealing. There are now lots of books, articles, groups and other resources to help you get started with home schooling. Aside from what you can read on the topic, you can also meet lots of other people who are doing home schooling. Home schooling can be a way to ensure that your kids receive the type of education you can really believe in.
